WHY WE GIVE — THE HEART BEHIND BFC

Every season of giving reminds us why Breakaway From Cancer exists — to be a light for families navigating the hardest fight of their lives.

Across the rodeo world and beyond, too many of our friends, fellow competitors, parents, and loved ones have heard the words no one wants to hear:
“It’s cancer.”

When they do, BFC steps in with support, resources, community, and hope. This GivingTuesday, we’re asking you to join us in carrying the rope a little farther for those who need it most.

Your support directly fuels:

  • The Guiding Light Grant — direct financial relief for families in crisis

  • Awareness & early detection education

  • Community-focused events like Cans & Calves for a Cause

Every gift — big or small — makes an immediate impact.

WELCOME TO BREAKAWAY FROM CANCER!

We are a National 501(c)3 Nonprofit organization that aims to provide social, emotional and financial support to U.S. citizens in the equine community diagnosed with cancer.

Four individuals inspired by a friend’s courage and determination in the face of a dire cancer diagnosis set out to help one person financially—and discovered a calling to help many more. Volunteer founding members John, Brian, Amy, and Beth have all been involved with horses throughout their lives. In 2022, they formed Breakaway From Cancer, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing support to individuals within the equine community who are currently battling cancer.

With the help of an additional six-member volunteer board, Breakaway From Cancer has hit the ground running. In just three short years, we’ve provided financial assistance to 13 individuals, awarding $130,000 to date.

Please take some time to review our website to better understand what our person of inspiration and guiding light grant recipients have faced daily and you will understand why we are on a mission to have them and future beneficiaries of our nonprofit Breakaway From Cancer!
